ORLANDO, FL, UNITED STATES, October 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Upcoming Film The Colored Waif’s Home to Spotlight the Overlooked Figures Behind Louis Armstrong’s Early Years

A Jazz and Louis Armstrong prequel rooted in New Orleans history

Historian and researcher Allen Y. Kimble, Jr. announces the development of The Colored Waif’s Home, a planned feature film exploring the remarkable people and New Orleans institution that helped shape young Louis Armstrong before he became an international music legend.

Envisioned as a Jazz and Louis Armstrong prequel, the film will bring to the forefront three figures whose contributions deserve greater recognition: Captain Joseph G. Jones, Manuella Duplessis Jones, and music instructor Professor Peter Davis.

Through their leadership, care, discipline, and guidance, the Colored Waif’s Home became more than an institution for boys. It became a place where young lives could be redirected and where extraordinary musical possibilities could take root—including those of a young Louis Armstrong.

Kimble brings more than four decades of research to the project and a unique personal connection to its history. Having married into the Jones family, he has spent decades preserving and studying family recollections, historical documents, photographs, and memorabilia associated with the Home, the Jones family, and Armstrong’s formative years.

The Colored Waif’s Home will draw upon this extensive body of research to tell a story of perseverance, opportunity, mentorship, music, and the largely overlooked people who helped lay part of the foundation for one of the most consequential musical careers of the twentieth century.

The project is currently seeking to raise $10,000 through crowdfunding to produce a short proof of concept. The proof of concept will demonstrate the historical story, principal characters, tone, and cinematic vision of the proposed full-length feature while helping attract filmmakers, collaborators, supporters, and production partners.

Kimble hopes the project will also rally support throughout New Orleans—from its citizens, cultural and historical organizations, businesses, musicians, civic leaders, and others who recognize the importance of preserving and telling the city’s history.

Supporters, historians, arts organizations, businesses, members of the film community, and prospective partners are invited to help bring this important New Orleans story to the screen.
